Moving to an operational system for forecasting harmful algal blooms

2005
Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose a threat to public health, economies, and wildlife around the Nation's coasts. Monitoring for HABs has involved a reactive system, which is a logistically expensive system. Improved forecasting and monitoring could reducing the impact of the blooms. An example of an operational system has been developed for the blooms of the toxic dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis in the Gulf of Mexico
