EXTRATO DA CASCA DO BARBATIMÃO (Stryphnodendron barbatiman Martius) ASSOCIADO AO TRATAMENTO CIRÚRGICO E TOALETE DOS CASCOS NA RECUPERAÇÃO DE BOVINOS DA RAÇA NELORE COM DERMATITE DIGITAL

2009
Digital diseases of cattle may cause significant economic losses, so a lot of attention needs to be paid to them. Hoof care is a preventive measure that helps lessen the chances of lameness. It consists of removing excess dead tissue by trimming, which ensures better weight distribution on the claws. This study evaluates the therapeutic properties of barbatimao bark extract solutions and unguents for surgical use, hoof care, and healing of digital dermatitis lesions in Nelore cattle. A total of 120 animals presenting footwart lesions at different stages of development were investigated. They were divided into three groups of 40 animals each (GI, GII, and GIII) and received different types of treatment: application of barbatimao solution; application of unguent; and use of pediluvium, respectively. Comparison of treatments and lesions was carried out by a chi-square test with significance of p<0,05. We observed that the use of barbatimao extract in the surgery and hoof care of healthy and sick animals contributed in some degree to the healing process of digital dermatitis lesions, especially the solution form, which resulted in rapid recovery.
