Quantum liquid crystals: Orientationally ordered quantum liquids☆

Abstract We summarize here a theory of quantum liquid crystals: quantum liquids of anisotropic molecules which exhibit macroscopic orientational order. As an exercise, the theory is applied to ortho-hydrogen adsorbed on graphite surface. Parameters in the H 2 -graphite potential are varied to determine conditions favorable to the existence of orientationally ordered phases.
