Preparation of ferromagnetic glass-ceramics

2010
Glass-ceramics were prepared by the melting method with SiO2, Na2O, CaO, P2O5 and Fe2O3 as the raw material. As the magnetite crystal grew spontaneously during the natural cooling process of glass, there was no thermal processing, such as nucleating and crystallization etc., conducted for the glass during this fabrication process. The phase composition of the prepared glass-ceramics was identified by XRD, and the lattice constant and grain size of the included crystals were calculated. The magnetic property of the glass-ceramics was evaluated with a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results show that only the magnetite phase is found in the prepared glass-ceramics which are bioactive. Samples containing 45% (mass fraction) Fe2O3 show better performance in comparison to other samples, and their specific saturation magnetic moment and coercive force are 20.24 A·m2/kg and 7 kA/m respectively.
