What are your views on commercialization of tissues for research

2012
Commercialization in the context of biobank research is controversial both regarding the possible right of individuals to receive monetary compensation for (the use of) their tissue samples and of biobanks to sell the material. In the United States there is acceptance of the possibility of using the human body as a capital resource, whereas European law is based on principles that categorically prohibit selling parts of the body. In some contexts, e.g. organ transplantation, the consequences of a policy that permits commercialization (understood as the introduction of a product into the market) could be devastating for both individuals and society. However, it is not clear that this holds true for tissue samples used in research.
