In this study a problem situation (SP) was developed based on Meirieus orientations and applied to facilitate understanding of the chemical reactions content, develop procedures and attitudes of beginner students in Veterinary Medicine Course of UFRPE. Three experimental activities that focused on chemical and physical processes related to SP were experienced. The results showed that the experimental activities helped the students to respond to SP, which at first was seen by them as a puzzle and at the same time as a challenge in finding a solution. Most groups responded to SP considering the phenomenological and the representational levels of chemical knowledge, but had difficulties with respect to the theoretical aspect.
