Pediatric neurological emergencies

Considering neurological emergencies in childhood, cerebral seizures are very com- mon and therefore of outstanding impor- tance. An effective and safe treatment strate- gy is necessary for the prehospital as well as the hospital setting. Even more seldom, me- ningoencephalitis and ischemic stroke have to be considered to enable the best possi- ble outcome. The well known ABC algorithm is applicable and helpful also for neurolog- ical emergencies as it is for other emergen- cy situations. This strategy applies especial- ly to the unconscious child where there can be diverse etiologies. Because neurological emergencies will sometimes lead to the irre- versible loss of brain function, the special as- pects of brain death in early childhood are also dealt with.
