Influence of Magnesium and Chrome on the Microstructure and Properties of the Al–Mg–Sc System as—Cast Alloys

2020
The effect of magnesium content reduction and chromium alloying on the microstructure, phase composition, strength, and plasticity, as well as the corrosion resistance of the Al–Mg–Sc system as cast alloys obtained using the technology of magnetohydrodynamic mixing of the melt has been studied. The positive effect of reducing the magnesium content and replacing manganese with chromium in such alloy was found. The increase in the alloy strength with decreasing magnesium content is due to the intensification of the Al3(Sc1-xZrx) nanoscale phase formation instead of the Al3Sc phase. Chromium alloying provides higher corrosion resistance of the alloy while reducing the corrosion current and increasing the corrosion potential.
