Spin dependence of pp inelasticities at intermediate energies.

The asymmetries A/sub N//sub N/ and A/sub L//sub L/ have been measured at small angles for the p-arrow-right p-arrow-right..-->..d..pi../sup +/ reaction at 650 and 800 MeV. Now complete angular distributions are integrated to obtain the contribution of this channel to ..delta..sigma/sub L/. These contributions are combined with those from the elastic channel to determine ..delta..sigma/sub L/(p-arrow-right p-arrow-right..-->..NN..pi..) at 650 ( = 0.775 +- 0.5 mb) and 800 ( = -1.52 +- 0.6 mb) MeV. There is pronounced disagreement between these data and the predictions of conventional theories. A/sub N//sub N/ and A/sub L//sub L/ also compared with theoretical predictions and their influence on partial-wave analyses is discussed.
