Seroprevalence of Porcine Circovirus Type-2 (PCV2) and molecular diagnosis of PCV2 associated reproductive failure in pig population of Nagaland

2017
The present study was carried out on seroprevalence of PCV2 and Porcine Circoviru-2 associated reproductive failure in pig population of Nagaland state. Analysis of total 223 serum samples collected from pigs of different age group from different districts of Nagaland by commercially available ELISA kit, which could titrate both IgM and IgG levels against PCV2 to assess the status of infection in pigs has revealed 51.57% positive results for PCV-2 specific antibodies. Further, within the positive cases 8.69% were identified as active infection, 12.17% as recent infection and 79.13% as old infection. Reproductive failure in sows characterized by abortions, still birth, mummification and neonatal deaths was studied in total 35 cases. Detailed necropsy was carried out in aborted, still born fetuses and dead neonatal pigs. PCR assay and gross and histopathological results have confirmed 11.43% cases as PCV2 associated reproductive failure. This study established endemic status of PCV-2 and also confirmed PCV2 associated reproductive failure in pig population of Nagaland.
