Analysis of the Interaction between Broad Embankment and Its Subsoil

This paper presents the design of several embankment cases with different combinations of fill's height,fill's stiffness and subsoil's stiffness,and meshes embankment and subsoil together.The settlement and horizontal displacement of the subsoil are analyzed by FEM program applying modified Cam-clay model to subsoil and Mohr-Coulomb model to fill.The results show that the subsoil's settlement and horizontal displacement are closely related to fill's height,fill's stiffness and subsoil's stiffness,which can be concluded as follows:In the case of soft subsoil,settlement at the two sides of broad embankment is more than that at the middle part,and the location of the maximum settlement moves toward the central part as the height of loading goes on;In the case of stiffer subsoil,horizontal displacement becomes small and maximum settlement doesn't happened at the two sides of broad embankment again;In the case of stiffer fill,settlement,horizontal displacement and differential settlement become smaller,and differential settlement decreases as loading goes on.
