Three-Dimensional Blood Flows Associated with Intra-Aortic Balloon Counterpulsation

1991
Three-dimensional blood flow processes associated with intra-aortic balloon counterpuslation (IABP) are calculated using a Cray YMP supercomputer. The mathematical model incorporates a time-dependent motion of the balloon with a pulsatory pressure drop. The complexity of the unsteady flow processes associated with the motion of the balloon are tractable when the time-dependent domain of the flow field is mapped onto a fixed annular region in a new coordinate system.
