XRD investigation of biodegradable magnesium rare earth alloy

2021
Abstract Magnesium (Mg) alloys are biodegradable and biocompatible in nature, which are widely used in biomedical application. Magnesium based biodegradable materials possess mechanical properties same as that of human bone. This shows Mg is a promising substitute for implants due to its biodegradability in the physiological environment i.e. inside human body. Pure Mg has low mechanical properties; hence Mg being alloyed with other alloying elements like Al, Ca, Zn, Sr and Rare earth elements (REE) like Sr, Gd, etc to increase its properties. In this research a detail discussion on Mg-Gd and Mg-Sr alloys impact on orthopedic implants is summarised and an attempt is made to investigate the metallurgical properties viz. XRD of gravity casted Mg-2Sr and Mg-2Sr-2Gd.
