Clinical Trials of Temporomandibular Joint Involvement of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: TMJ JIA Clinical Trials

2021
Abstract Objective: The objective of this report is to review the current available clinical trials of JIA regarding the diagnosis, management, or outcomes of TMJ involvement. We hypothesized that such clinical trials are rare. Study Design: The Clinical Trials Database was queried through ClinicalTrials.gov for keywords relevant to juvenile idiopathic arthritis and temporomandibular joint. The outcome variables were: clinical trial number, principal investigator information, trial information, and reported results. Results: There were 224 clinical trials involving JIA. Six studies involved the TMJs. The sample sizes ranged from 12 to 452 subjects. No studies were NIH funded. Five of the studies are closed to enrollment with only one posting results. The open study has been actively recruiting patients for over 12 years. Conclusion: Of the 224 registered clinical trials involving JIA, six studies involved the TMJs. An increase in focused funding opportunities and multicenter trials may help increase the number of clinial trials for this patient population.
