Experimental study on surge response of grounding system of traction substation

Transient surge current is applied to the overhead grounding system of traction substation to understand the transient voltage response of grounding system of substation. The tests were carried out for three days at OoiFuto Substation o East Japan Railway Company under some conditions. In this paper, the results of three tests are reported, those are influence of the temporally grounding rods location, influence of surge injection point on the overhead grounding wire and influence of overhead grounding wire configuration. By suppressing transient overvoltage of the grounding mesh, it is possible to protect electric machine from lightning and will contribute to increasing a reliability of traction power supply.
