Effect of Ozonation on Reduction of Volume and Mass of Waste Activated Sludge

2008
The effect o f o zonation on sludge treatment wa s inv estigated. T he main o bjective of t his research was to asses the effectiveness of different ozone doses on sludge disintegration and mineralization, f or which the parameters of T S, T SS, V S and settlable solids w ere chosen. T he results 3 indicate that the ozone at doses between 0.125 to 2 gO g TS reduced TS, TSS and VS between 15.4% -1 to 80 .7%, 8.3% to 47 .9% and 5. 8% to 45.9%, respectively. It can be concluded from these r esults that the ozone could mineralize a high fraction of volatile solids so that the minimum reduction of VS in waste activated sludge required by E PA was a chievable via ozonation. O zonation also improved the settlabilty of the sl udge whi ch res ulted in reducing t he sl udge vo lume. Reduction of sludge vo lume can decrease the cost o f i ts ha ndling.
