Influence of a change in the synovia constituent on temporomandibular joint in senescence accelerated mouse P8

2004
Abstract We disclosed that sodium hyaluronate (HA), which was one of the synovia constituent might reduce degenerative temporomandibular joint disease (DJD) in senescence-accelerated mouse P8 (SAMP8). Therefore, the present study was to investigate the morphological changes in the mandibular condyle produced by the polyethylene glycol (PG), which had similar viscosity to HA in SAMP8. Ninety male SAMP8s were divided into 2-, 4- and 6-month-old groups. Moreover, these groups were divided into the PG and the control group. After 2 months, all mice were sacrificed, and the surface of the mandibular condyle was observed under the substantial microscope and evaluated morphologically. As a result, the surface of the mandibular condyle in the PG group showed fewer degenerative changes than in the control group in the 6-month-old group. This result was the same as HA. Therefore, it was suggested that the polyethylene glycol might reduce DJD in SAMP8.
