This paper presents an analysis of Japanese community formation and shrine building in Dalian after Russo-Japanese War with a special focus on the nature of the subjects that participated in the construction of Dalian Shrine. Dalian Shrine was built on Dalian Busan by Izumo Taishakyo, but there was the force of Demiz Yataro, who tried to build the shrine from the beginning apart from Izumo Taishakyo, in the background of its construction. However, Demiz also suffered a frustration with his attempt because Dalian was hit by a recession in 1907 and 1908 and also because he failed to receive collaboration from Izumo Taishakyo, who was the central force in the Japanese community of Dalian. The case shows that shrine building in an overseas Japanese community was not smoothly carried out in the agreement and consent of all the Japanese people in the concerned area. There is a need to pay attention to the fact that an opium wholesaler called Yishimoto Kantaro provided a lot of assistance for the construction of Dalian Shrine. The fact opens up the possibility that the nature of an overseas shrine can be discussed through the nature of construction subjects as well as the enshrined deity. Overseas Japanese communities started to build a shrine during a modern transition period, which should be discussed based on the analysis of how and in what social structure shrines were established. When those efforts are made, one will be able to figure out the process of overseas Japanese communities and their shrines gradually losing their individualities and forming parts of Japanese Empire.
