The 2020 Climate Informatics Hackathon: Generating Nighttime Satellite Imagery from Infrared Observations

The 2020 Climate Informatics hackathon virtually gathered 40 participants to work on techniques for the generation of nighttime satellite imagery from infrared observations. In this paper, we discuss the data preparation process, the methods used by the participants, and the results of the privately held competition. A public version of the competition provides freely the data and is open on the Codalab platform to foster further research on this direction, it can be found here: https://competitions.codalab.org/competitions/26644.
