Responding to classroom change: How low-income Latino parents view technology's impacts on student learning

2017
This chapter evaluates how parents are interpreting and responding to the increasing integration of technology into their children's formal learning. Many of the initiatives that seek to integrate technology into the classroom are developed and assessed locally at the district or state level. Parents shared their views on how classroom technology use generally influences their children's formal learning experiences. Proponents of technological innovations in the classroom have frequently emphasized its potential for enabling students to work at their own pace and engage with content in formats calibrated to their individual learning styles. Many parents worried that classroom technology use threatened another highly valued form of "personalized learning": the quality of the teacher–student relationship. Some parents started noticing changes in their children's learning when they began using technology in the classroom. Parents' responses provide deeper insights into their hopes and misgivings about the influence of technology on their children's educational trajectories.
