Electrokinetic studies on estrone/aqueous solutions of nonelectrolyte and electrolyte systems

1981
Electroosmotic, streaming current, and streaming potential measurements have been carried out on estrone membrane using water and aqueous solutions of glucose, sucrose, urea, sodium chloride, and barium chloride. The Onsager reciprocity relationship is found to be valid for all the cases studied, even though streaming current varies nonlinearly with applied pressure difference, ΔP, in the case of aqueous solutions of nonelectrolytes. Second-order terms do not appear in the equation for streaming current for aqueous solutions of electrolytes. Electrophoretic mobility of estrone particles of a known size distribution dispersed in water and aqueous solutions of glucose, sucrose, urea, sodium chloride, and barium chloride have also been studied. The results are interpreted from the viewpoint of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. Some comments on the electrical properties of estrone are also made.
