The induced radioactivity background in OSSE

2008
An updated calculation of the induced radioactivity background is presented, using Monte Carlo radiation transport codes to give isotope production rates in OSSE, and rewritten codes for the determination of decay rates and summation of isotope response functions. OSSE’s charged particle monitor rates are now used for trapped proton fluences, and a number of nuclides have been added to the calculation. The spectrum produced corresponds well with that observed: almost all of the lines are present, and the continuum predicted is within a factor of two of experimental background. An approximate calculation of the prompt Iodine 127 (n,γ) response has also been made, and a list of lines and the isotopes to which they are attributed is included.
