The present invention makes highly accurate distance detection with enhanced resolution possible. An aspect of the present invention relates to a distance measurement device provided with a photoelectric conversion element having a light receiving unit for converting incident light to electric charge, an electric charge storage unit for storing the electric charge, an electric charge discharge unit for discharging the electric charge, and a gate electrode for controlling the transfer of the electric charge from the light receiving unit to the electric charge storage unit and the transfer of the electric charge from the light receiving unit to the electric charge discharge unit; a control unit that controls the timing of the irradiation, onto an object, of pulse light having a pulse width that is sufficiently shorter than the response time of the light receiving unit and performs control such that control pulse voltages having at least two types of phases are generated on the basis of the irradiation timing and applied to the gate electrode; an electric charge reading unit for respectively reading, as a first and second electric signal, a first and second electric charge stored in the electric charge storage unit in accordance with the application of the control pulse voltages having two types of phases; and a calculation unit for calculating the distance to the object on the basis of the first and second electric signal.
