PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new DNA for the detection, etc., of an LAV hybridizable with a genomic RNA of the LAV without hybridizing with an RNA of a human T cell leukemia virus-I or a human T lymphotropic virus-I (HTLV-I), etc., by dot-hybridization and associated with AIDS. SOLUTION: This new cloned DNA contains a DNA insert fragment hybridizable with a genomic RNA of a lymphadenopathy-associated virus(LAV) contained in λ (lambda) J19 [Collection Nationale de Cultures de Micro- organismes I-338(CNCM I-338)] under nonstringent conditions without cross- hybridizing with an RNA of a human T cell leukemia/lymphoma virus I type(HTLV-I) or HTLV-II retrovirus in a dot-hybridization assay under low stringent conditions which are 37°C in 20% formamide, 5×SSC, 1 × Denhardt's solution and 1% dextran sulfate. The DNA is useful for the detection, etc., of the LAV associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS). COPYRIGHT: (C)1996,JPO
