fillment. Given this communally directed economy, it is interesting that some forms of private property are found. Miners are allowed to extract and take minerals from the mines, which they can use as gifts, in displays, and for sale, but the minerals are an exhaustible resource as well. For her theoretical framework, Ferry draws mostly on a series of ideas, set forth in the introduction, concerning property, value, and the gift. Many of these concepts that have been developed and used for ethnography from the Pacific disappear in the body of the book, however. Ferry does refer to the work of Nash, Taussig, and Garco´a Canclini, but she elides almost all the relevant comparable theoretical work and studies focused on local economies, the dialectics of community and market, and metaphors in other parts of Latin America that share a colonial heritage with Guanajuato. A theoretical approach of this kind would have rendered the phenomena experienced with the cooperative comparable to other forms of “debasement” taking place in different settings. The case of this cooperative displays not only macroeconomic neoliberal policies but also more general tendencies.
