Ferry does refer to the work of Nash, Taussig, and Garco´a Canclini, but she elides almost all the relevant comparable theoretical work and studies focused on local economies, the dialectics of community and market, and metaphors in other parts of Latin America that share a colonial heritage with Guanajuato. A theoretical approach of this kind would have rendered the phenomena experienced with the cooperative comparable to other forms of “debasement” taking place in different settings. The case of this cooperative displays not only macroeconomic neoliberal policies but also more general tendencies.
