Surface treatment of aluminum alloys containing high amounts of silicon

A plasma-chemical process was used to produce a black oxide layer on a newly developed aluminum-silicon alloy. Because of the good mechanical properties of the base material and the black inorganic coating, the alloy is suitable for space applications. The coating process was investigated employing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX).
