Mechanical and microstructural behavior effect of 304 and 316L austenitic stainless during the rotary friction welding process

The objective of the current work was to explore the mechanical and microstructural behavior effect of process parameters for dissimilar joints welded with rotary friction welding. The welding was carried out with three different rotational speeds and forging pressure respectively while friction pressure, friction time, forging time, and burn-off were kept constant throughout the process. Rotary friction welding response graph was used to assist on how the process parameter reacts during a certain time. It was discovered that forging pressure and rotational speed were the major parameters that influenced the hardness and bonding at the interface region irrespective of the process combination. The grains in the Thermo-mechanically affected were found to be refined, hence in the heat-affected zone, the grains were deformed.
