IMPACTS DE L’ÉVOLUTION DE LA CONSOMMATION DES PROTÉINES ANIMALES SUR L’ÉLEVAGE ET LES ÉLEVEURS DANS LES PAYS DU SUD

2013
In developing countries, the consumption of animal products has increased rapidly over the past decades, particularly in East and South-East Asia, and to a lesser extent in Latin America and the Caribbean. This caused a deep structural transformation of terrestrial and aquatic animal farming as well as overfishing, to increase the supply of animal products and keep consumer prices at relatively moderate levels. Animal production systems and fishery management have become more intensive, industrialized and specialized. They often integrate vertically the processing and marketing services to the production units in the local, regional and international value chain. They have also taken advantage of technological innovations, globalization of the economy, lower animal feed prices, and public and private investments. However, although the development of large-scale, intensive livestock production and overfishing created opportunities for developing countries, they also brought negative social, economic and environmental externalities. Therefore, current and future challenges for developing countries will be to implement alternative practices that guarantee effective and sustainable livestock and fishery production systems
