Analysis of failures in the accessibility of university buildings

Abstract Non-accessible buildings become exclusive elements for people with disabilities. Regarding universities, the existence of flaws in the built physical space limits the right to inclusive education. In this perspective, the general objective of this research is to identify, analyze and evaluate the flaws that compromise the accessibility of university buildings and the use of their spaces by people with disabilities. Methodologically, the research was supported by a case study at a public university with about 50 thousand students. For eight months, forty buildings at this university were analyzed with the integration of different risk management tools. As main results, it is observed that 80% of the flaws are related to accessible space, tactile signage, bathroom parts and accessories, and visual signage. As a main contribution, a flaw mapping procedure focused on spatial accessibility parameters and requirements is presented. As an innovation, the research uses the Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) technique, which proved to be adequate to address the accessibility-related flaws, their effects, current control mechanisms, criticality level and action plan to adapt university spaces that promote conditions of use by people with disabilities.
