Preparation of (Gd1 − xYbx )3Al5O12 transparent ceramics

(Gd1-xYbx)3Al5O12 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) transparent ceramics were prepared by solid state reaction. The stability of (Gd1 − xYbx)3Al5O12 garnet phase is strongly affected by amount of Yb and the sintered temperature. At 1550°C, 10% Yb substitution is enough to get stable garnet phase, while at 1650°C, it needs 17% Yb substitution. The transmittance of transparent ceramics is larger than 60% at 800 nm. For (Gd1 − xYbx)3Al5O12 transparent scintillators, the activators for doping should have longer emission wavelength.
