Effectiveness of two-stage removal of blast-furnace slag

One method of improving the quality of steel is desulfurizing the pig iron with magnesium, although the transfer of sulfur from slag to metal is significantly greater in this instance than from the slag when magnesium is not used. Also, the reduction in pig temperature during the treatment and the increase in the sulfur content of the slag adversely affect the economics of the steelmaking conversion.
