Results of Doctor and Nurse’s Complaints: Study in Northeastern of Thailand

Background and objective : Although doctors and nurses have good intentions, sometimes they will have problem which can lead to complaints. The end results from these complaints vary and can have different outcomes. The aims of this study are frequency of complaints , different types of complaints , results of violence, the relationship between gender and complaints and the relationship between duration of working experience and outcome . Method : This study is a research survey. The sample group is 166 doctors and nurses, working in the Northeastern region of Thailand, who attended academic training from Department of Forensic Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University. The research instrument was a questionnaire designed by a researcher. Data collection is provided by self-administered questionnaires. Data analysis is based on frequency and percentage. Results : The percentage of doctors and nurses who experienced patient complaints is 64.8%. Most of these are civil cases at about 61.0%. The parties have successful conciliation without paying compensation about 41.4%.. Most of the cases ended at the hospital level 61.2%. The experience of being prosecuted in discipline, criminal law, civil law and media has no relation with gender. In the other hand, the working range 11-20 years experienced in criminal complaint (p = 0.004) less than any other groups and using media complaints (p = 0.031) more than any other range with statistically significant. Conclusion : Most doctors and nurses have complaints filed against them for damages, with each working experience having a chance to be in a different complaint category.
