Experimental ultra wide band imaging using heterogeneously dense breast phantom for early cancer detection

2012
This paper presents experimental results of chemically derived breast phantom using a modified version of beam focusing algorithm referred herein as the Enhanced Delay and Sum (EDAS). Oriented for early detection of malignant tumour, the method employs ultra wide band (UWB) antennas for sensing. Meanwhile data capturing is based on a multistatic arrangement. Laboratory hemispherical breast phantoms with different levels of dielectric heterogeneity are fabricated. The proposed algorithm is investigated utilizing experimental data for validation. In spite of the low electrical contrast between breast and malignant tissues, experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately detect and localize millimetre size tumour in the heterogeneously dense media.
