Characteristics of persons with overactive bladder of presumed neurologic origin: Results from the Boston Area Community Health (BACH) Survey

2012
Neurourol Urodyn 2012; 31: 1149-1155. Abstract available at http://jurology.com/ Editorial Comment: The BACH study continues to provide important insights into the epidemiol- ogy of urological conditions. In this report the authors compare participants with overactive bladder (OAB) presumably related to neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson disease to participants with OAB who did not report any of these neurological conditions. They found that the participants with neurological conditions and OAB reported worse symptom severity and quality of life than those with OAB not reporting neurological conditions. Clinicians, particularly neurologists, need to be aware of the results of this study, as it illustrates that these neurological conditions commonly have urological sequelae (31% of BACH participants who reported neurological conditions also reported OAB) and that these symptoms are highly bothersome to patients.
