Development of a 'Smart' Plasma Arc Cutting System

This paper discusses some performance limiting factors in plasma arc cutting technology. This technology is utilised in the metal fabrication industry for cutting metallic plate and sheet. The main factors affecting cut quality are: (i) erosion of the consumable parts of the plasma arc cutting torch, and (ii) the plasma arc cutting process control method. The limitations of this cutting technology are being addressed in the development of a 'Smart' Plasma Arc Cutting System.
