Trends in the Diagnosis and Management of Benign Hyperplasia Prostate in Indonesia

Objective To investigate characteristic of indonesian urologists practice pattern in the diagnosis and managing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) Materials & method Samples was taken from the indonesian urological association registry of physicians, and a 6 items questionnaire, that explored practice patterns in the diagnosis and management of BPH, was distributed to indonesian urologist that present in the urologist annual meeting the 33rd annual meeting of indonesian urological association and join session indonesian urological association belgian association of urology october 7-10, 2010. Result 118 urologist had complete questionnaire from total 214 registered member of indonesian urological association. for the initial evaluation, most urologist routinely used digital rectal examination (DRE), urinalisis, and creatinin serum. urologist in general hospital not routinely used PSA. uroflowmetry was used 30,5%, pressure flow studies were rarely done. symptoms score was used in 65,25% of case, 49,15% reported that treatment based on symptoms score (IPSS). of the respondents, 55,1% and 40,7% had prescribed alpha-blocker and alpha-blocker with 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor on the moderate symptom score (IPSS) case. most urologist prescribed 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor based on the prostate size. Conclusion These data provide characteristic practice pattern regarding the diagnosis and management of BPH in Indonesia that depends on available of the diagnostic and the management tools.
