Analysis of high school students’ skills in solving science problems in the environment

Problem solving is one of the competencies that students must have starting from basic education. High school graduates are expected to have the skills and ability to solve problems to face the challenges of an increasingly competitive nation. The low ability of problem solving in students can result in the low quality of human resources. Therefore, teachers are required to be able to choose appropriate learning methods and models so that students’ problem-solving skills can be realized. Changes in teaching strategies need to be done so that learning is not centered on the teacher but on students, so that students tend to be active in finding their own answers or solutions to a problem and applying it in everyday life. This study aims to describe the skill level of high school students to solve science problems in the environment. The method used is descriptive quantitative to get a overview of the skills of high school students in solving science problems in the environment. The data collection technique was in the form of a written test. The research variable is the skills of high school students in solving science problems in the environment. The research sample was high school students of science study program in East Java who used purposive sampling. Overall, the average percentage of high school students’ skill results in solving science problems in the good category was 78.74%.
