Symptomatic Talocalcaneal Coalition

Tarsal coalition is a congenital fibrous, cartilaginous, or osseous union of the tarsal bones of the foot. Previous literatures have reported that the incidence of tarsal coalitions is between 0.03% and 0.4%. Talocalcaneal coalition, which is most common among tarsal coalitions, occasionally causes tarsal tunnel syndrome. In this paper, we report a female patient who had pain in her feet and slight limitation of subtalar motion. The findings only on plain roentgenogram were insufficient for diagnosing coalition. Computed tomography was the most useful for the diagnosis of early coalition and for determining the extent of resection. The patient was treated with resection of the coalition because conservative treatment failed to relieve pain. Symptoms improved after resection.
