Main Frame Structural Optimization for Power Transformers in Short Circuit

2018
Electric power market is a contemporary challenge, due to the permanent increase in energy distribution demands, suppliers of power transformers have to constantly improve their engineering solutions for the design of equipment that are able to adapt to this permanent evolution. A fundamental challenge is the research of structural components embedded in power transformers tank that are able to withstand loading due to regular production loading, as vacuum, or during service like short-circuit events. This paper presents the results of experimental testing on different main frame geometries of power transformers shell type to predict structural behavior due to short-circuit electromagnetic force The resulting data allows the determination of novel structural lay-outs that are optimized to lower deformation due to these specific loading regimes, are characterized by a reduced use of material and lowering of the overall structural weight.
