Low-temperature oxidation of bituminous coal: Its detection and effect on coal conversion

Abstract Results are summarized from a 30-month investigation into low-temperature oxidation of minerals and macerals in two bituminous coals and related alteration of their technological properties. Based on the results of this and other studies, conclusions are presented regarding mechanisms and potential synergistic effects of mineral and maceral oxidation, the relative sensitivity of the various techniques employed for detection of incipient oxidation, and the impact of oxidation on coal conversion processes.
