Chinese character card utilization’ is a method for using teaching tools. It is a useful teaching and learning method for students to learn Chinese character vocabulary by showing cards with Chinese characters or words, arranging cards according to order, or combining cards with the components of the Chinese characters to complete the Chinese character. The ‘Chinese character card utilization’ was introduced as a significant teaching/learning method in Chinese character education courses since the 7th educational curriculum period. In the 2015 revised educational curriculum period, it was expanded and deepened using teaching and learning methods that could be applied throughout learning such as the ‘shape, pronunciation, meaning of Chinese characters’, ‘strokes of Chinese characters’, ‘stroke order of Chinese characters’, ‘organization of words’, ‘substantive and expletive’, etc.This article explores the cases of using Chinese character card utilization methods focusing on Chinese character card utilization methods described in middle and high school Chinese character textbooks compiled according to the 2015 revised Chinese character educational curriculum. First, as Chinese character card utilization methods for learning Chinese characters, teaching/learning methods such as ‘total stroke face-off game’, ‘bingo game’, ‘hole card game’, ‘remembering game’, ‘Chinese character organization categorization activity’, etc. that uses Chinese character cards were proposed. Next, teaching/learning methods such as ‘connecting similar cards’, ‘learning organization of words’, ‘using Chinese character cards to make words’, ‘taking Chinese character card game’, ‘making idioms using Chinese character cards’, ‘making sentences with Chinese character cards’, and ‘learning use of parts of speech with Chinese character cards’, etc. were presented.Upon conducting a full inspection on 28 middle and high school Chinese character textbooks compiled according to the 2015 revised educational curriculum, introduction of teaching/learning methods using Chinese character cards show that there is severe compilation according to textbooks. Also, among many textbooks containing contents on using the Chinese character card utilization method, it does not describe contents that can be used as methods for teaching and learning, and there were also many cases where the questions were composed in the form of self-evaluation or performance assessments. It can be viewed that the utilization method of Chinese character cards are conducted as learning methods through games in schools, therefore having many limitations as learning methods of textbooks. Meanwhile, Chinese character card utilization methods can be viewed to be not only useful methods as learning/teaching methods, but also as a method for evaluating Chinese character classes.The Chinese character card utilization method has a few problems for it to take root as an active teaching/learning method in school sites. A few problems are the issue of the teaching field, problems of learning time and contents, issues with learning methods according to the learning target, and issues of learning method and operation methods. If it is possible to overcome such issues and methods that could be used in school sites are found, the Chinese character card utilization method can be a significant method and effective tool for Chinese character teaching and learning.
