Webb's book deals with the chequered history of the First National Bank. He traces its origins from the time that it established its dominance in two of the new provinces in the Union of South Africa - the OFS and the Transvaal - until it seemed poised to challenge the dominance of Standard Bank, the largest overseas bank.
