From1983to1986, asurvey wasmadeofvascular plants onSt.Catherines Island (2916 ha)in Liberty County along theGeorgia coast. A total of373species wascollected andidentified. The floristic diversity ofSt.Catherines Island islow compared withthatofseveral similar barrier islands. Thismaybedueinparttotheextensive cultivation ofSeaIsland cotton bytheEuropean settlers andthe20thcentury useoftheisland for cattle production. Whenthese factors arecombinedwiththepresence offeral pigsandoverpopulation ofdeer, thelowdiversity isunderstandable.
