Prof. E. I. Rashba—Excellent Scientist, Teacher, and Editor

2003
The creative life of most significant and bright scientists, and Professor E. I. Rashba especially, usually has three components of intellectual activity: creative scientific work, teaching, and service to the appropriate community, e.g., editing. Through teaching scientists communicate with the next generation; through editing, a scientist influences the current generation, and his/her outstanding scientific work is for both— the present and the following generations. In all of these aspects of intellectual activity E. I. Rashba has made significant contributions. It is impossible to overestimate Professor Rashba’s contributions to modern physics, in general, and to condensed matter physics and semiconductors, in particular. During his work in Chernogolovka, in addition to original theoretical and predictive work, Professor Rashba very fruitfully collaborated with experimentalists in the field of condensed matter physics. His wide outlook, deep intuition, and unique ability to understand and to concentrate on the most important details of current experiments were not only useful but frequently played a stimulating role for experimentalists. We can give a few examples of such fruitful collaborations. These examples are connected
