Thin-film TiO2 and TiO2/Ag photocatalysts were screened for their antibacterial activity against G(-) and G(+) bacteria. The 6-fold increase in the photoinduced pathophysiological activity of titania as the result of deposition of fine silver particles on its surface has been observed. It has been shown that the enhanced photobiocide activity of TiO2/Ag-photocatalyst is due to high efficiency of generation of active oxygen species (both hydroxyl radicals and supreoxide ions). TiO2/Ag coatings can find application in a hospital environment due to their robustness, stability to cleaning, and excellent antimicrobial response.
