Development of a control strategy for the 18 MW power converter of the CERN PS Booster accelerator

2018
In the frame of the Large Hadron Collider Injectors Upgrade project, a new 18 MW power converter is required for the supply of the main magnets in the PS Booster accelerator. The power converter is composed of an Active Front End (AFE) and a DC/DC converter. A 3.5 MJ energy storage capacitor bank is installed between the AFE and the DC/DC and provides power decoupling between the AC network and the load. The control strategy has been implemented onto a DSP based platform designed by CERN and validated using a 1/10.000 power scaled prototype. The paper presents the control strategy choices and results obtained.
