DEEP UNDERGROUND TEST SHOTS

1956
This note considers the feasibility of conducting ktweapons tests in underground holes of such depth that the explosion will be effectively contained. Such tests would allow greater freedom in a test program by freeing the detonation of the devices from weather constraints and permitting tests at any time at which a test object is ready without the problem of fitting the bomb into a test series. Costs, advantages, and disadvantages are compared with tower shots. A trial test shot, to be included in the next Nevada test series, is recommended. (auth)
