Prediction of axial load on variable graded composite tubes for crashworthy structure

2020
Abstract Prediction of estimated load for crushing of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes presented with a simple mathematical equation on the basis of buckling theory and fracture mechanics approach. Buckling theory concept uses critical load carrying capacity of the FRP tubes and fracture mechanics concept uses the value of inter-laminar fracture energy release rate. Combination of above two concepts along with the mechanical and physical properties forms the prediction equation. The determined estimated loads from the prediction equation were compared with experimental quasi static axial compression test and comparison results show the good agreement.
