EVALUATION OF SUGARCANE CLONES FOR QUALITATIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF GUR

2008
Studies were conducted to evaluate five sugarcane clones (S98-SP-729, S96-SP-228, CPF-243, SPF-245 and HSF-240) for qualitative features of gur made from these clones. The experiment was planned on spring planted sugarcane crop during 2003-04 at Sugarcane Research Institute Faisalabad. Gur was prepared according to the methods mentioned in Gur Monograph (1951) and it was clarified by using sukhali extract. The samples were stored in gunny bags at room temperature for a period of three months and analysis of freshly prepared and three months old gur was made for ash%, color, moisture%, net rendements%, pH, sucrose% and reducing sugars%. The results revealed that standard clone HSF-240 came out as best by producing gur with lowest ash% (3.04%), lowest reducing sugars% (4.85% to 4.86%) and highest net rendements% (61.89%) while all other four clones failed to surpass it. Statistically significant and non-significant results were observed before and after the storage.
