Transmission line galloping induced dynamic strain measurement of an angle brace based power transmission tower by FBG sensors

We demonstrate an on-line strain measurement of an angle brace based power transmission tower by using fiber reinforced plastic packaged fiber Bragg grating sensors. The strain coupling between the angle braces and sensors at the different installation positions, are simulated and proved experimentally, which are crucial to understand the experimental results and the long-term application. The measurement of a kind of strong dynamic strain introduced by the transmission line galloping, one of our motivations, is demonstrated and focused as an example to show the capability of the sensing system. The results are useful to the strain measurements of the existing angle brace based structures, including types of towers, bridges and so on.
